Network Changes
February 2, 2010
I don't know if any of you noticed it or not, but I had to take our network on Ning offline for a couple of hours last night.
I apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused anyone.
I received an email from Donnie Dixon with Stiletto Entertainment requesting that I delete all of Barry's music from the network and completely disable the music feature.
He was very polite and professional, but straight to the point... that while they appreciated that I used all the safety features to prevent illegal downloading of Barry's music, there is a back door, so to speak, that people can use to still obtain individual tracks from the site (no, I won't say what it is. No sense in encouraging illegal activity).
Long story short, I took the network offline and went through all of the 168 profiles one by one and deleted ALL music from the network and then disabled the music feature. Again, I apologize for any inconvenience this causes anyone.
I'm not sure how they got information about the network, but I'm glad they did. After our discussion last week about mass illegal downloads, I sure didn't want to be making any of Barry's music available for that sort of thing.
Look, the truth is... I am guilty of sharing. I have a very small list of three or four friends that, when I know they won't be able to hear Barry's music otherwise, for whatever reason, I will share an mp3 or two with them. I also have a few friends who have done that for me. It happens all the time out here in Manilowland. It's a very thin line in a very gray area, but nothing like posting a direct download link from rapidshare, megaupload or the like on a website or blog that potentially can reach hundreds of people who don't give a rat's ass about what it could do to the artist, the artist's label, the musicians, the songwriters, the producers, the sound mixers, etc., etc.
So, no more music on the network.
One more thing... Stiletto gets such a bad rep for being the "bad guys". The truth is, they are just doing the best they can on behalf of Barry and his best interests. They are just protecting him, as an artist, and his legacy. I, for one, appreciate it. So, I would rather not see any disparaging comments directed at them.
If any of you have any questions about any of this, I'll do my best to answer them. Please email me privately at m_wampole@live.com
Thanks for understanding.
